Strong quake rocks northern Peru

A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck just off the coast of northern Peru today, the US Geological Survey reported.

A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck just off the coast of northern Peru today, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake, which shook the South American country at 1409 GMT, was centered 124 kilometers northwest of the city of Chiclayo, and 138 kilometers south of Piura, the USGS said.

The epicenter was at a depth of 35 kilometers, according to the USGS.
