Strong quake strikes south of Fiji

The quake was centred 360 kilometres (220 miles) southwest of Fiji's southern island of Ndoi and 565 kilometres south of the capital Suva, the USGS said.

The quake struck at 4.30 pm (0430 GMT) at a depth of 536 kilometres.

The region lies in the "Pacific ring of fire", a highly active earthquake and volcanic zone that regularly experiences quakes.
