Organisers said the number of demonstrators was "well over 50,000".

The protesters later submitted a petition to Prime Minister Gordon Brown at Downing Street, calling for Britain to persuade Sri Lankan forces to declare an immediate ceasefire, to be monitored by the international community.

Peace negotiations and "immediate humanitarian relief", they say, should follow this.
