According to authorities, the accident occurred on Sunday evening when the overloaded truck fell into a five-metre-deep ditch on a road bordering Veracruz and Puebla provinces, Spain's EFE news agency reported on Tuesday.

Police were still trying to determine the cause of the accident, said Ranulfo Marquez, a senior public safety official in the Gulf state of Veracruz.

Seven children, nine women and three men have been confirmed killed in the accident, Marquez's office said, citing the latest reports.

Accidents like this have increased in recent times in Mexico. In October, a bus accident in the western state of Guadalajara killed 15 people, while 17 were killed when a bus they were travelling in fell into a ravine in north-western Mexico in September.
