The Department of Health said Saturday that the new cases were confirmed in England. They said that while the virus has generally been mild in Britain, "a small minority of cases" are experiencing severe symptoms.

Scottish health authorities announced 83 new cases of the virus on Friday.

On Thursday, the World Health Organisation declared a swine flu pandemic, the first global flu epidemic in 41 years.
