Butted out! A US shore town has banned sagging pants, too-short skirts and other fashion flubs from its boardwalk, after receiving countless complaints about cheeky fashion statements being sported in public.
The Wildwood, New Jersey, town council on Wednesday voted unanimously to ban from its boardwalk, pants worn more than three inches below the hips.
"Sagging has become very offensive to a number of people," mayor Ernest Troiano said.
"I'm not trying to be the fashion police, but personally I find it offensive when a guy's butt is hanging out!" he said.
Troiano said the town wants saggers to butt out because tourists want to gaze at the mighty ocean, not boxers and briefs.
The law, set to take effect next month, establishes fines of $25 to $200 for sagging offenses, with 40 hours of community service as another possible penalty, the New York Daily News reported.
It also requires people to wear shirts after 8pm and footwear at all times, and allows cops to cite people for wearing too-short skirts and revealing blouses.
Troiano pushed for the rule after fielding countless complaints about the cheeky fashion statement.
Police won't make their rounds with measuring tape. They will ask obvious saggers to pull up their pants or leave the boardwalk before taking action, he said.
Wildwood is not the first US town to outlaw sagging.
Suburbs of cities like New Orleans and Miami have taken aim at the fashion flub. State senator Eric Adams (D-Brooklyn) posted billboards that read: "Stop the sag!" Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, passed an ordinance in April imposing fines for anyone who wears pants below the waist in public that expose underwear.
Bans elsewhere have prompted fears about racial profiling, with critics questioning their constitutionality.
