Ranveer Singh says moving into a new place and cutting himself off from the outside world to focus on his character really helps him.

Ranveer Singh has moved into his new apartment, which is closer to his current workplace (Filmcity, Goregaon). The actor’s idea, of course, is to stay completely focused on his character — Alauddin Khilji — for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next project and not waste time travelling across the city.

When we met Ranveer, he spoke about what he calls his “gufa [den]”. “This is where all the real work happens. I am completely cut off [from the outside world] when I am in my den. I am so high up over here [in the building] that there’s no mobile signal at all. So, even if I want to, I can’t be on the radar (laughs),” he says.

Ranveer says that keeping away from his usual routine helps him stay focused on his character. “In fact, I have designed this place like my workshop, and this is where I do all my creative work. And it’s a process that really helps me. It works very well for me as an actor. So, you can say that this is where all the action really happens,” says the actor.

Ranveer, who has already started shooting for Bhansali’s next film, is currently promoting his next release, which was directed by Aditya Chopra. “I’ve had more time to prep for this [his part in Padmavati] than I did for Bajirao Mastani. I got a few more days this time around,” he says.

Ranveer admits his role in Bhansali’s next film has been the toughest part he has had to play so far. “It’s completely out of my comfort zone. It’s a negative character. And to make such maverick decisions at this stage [of my career], is a huge risk. But I have to keep my creativity alive. I have always maintained that something is worth doing only if it thoroughly scares you (laughs).”

He adds that he has had his “happy, fun, light, beautiful, easy, breezy, pyaar, mohabbat waali [lovey-dovey] movie” in my upcoming film. “So, I have jumped into something more intense now, but it’s extremely exciting,” says the Band Baaja Baarat (2010) actor.
