What is a brahmarakshas? According to Vikram Bhatt’s Creature 3D, it’s a cross between a lizard and a dinosaur, with a splash of Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean thrown in. How did this creature come to be? There is a long-winded backstory that involves greed, a curse, a peepal tree and the only temple in India dedicated to Lord Brahma.

Honestly, by the time the zoologist in Creature 3D explained all this, I was too exhausted to care. Because this is one of those supremely foolish films that never even transcends into the so-bad-that-it’s good category. Bipasha Basu plays Ahana, the owner of a boutique hotel somewhere in the mountains. She opens the hotel on Christmas Day. Soon the Creature arrives and starts picking off her guests one by one. The hotel is shut down. Bankers want to seize control. But Ahana decides she won’t succumb to despair.

Instead, she will defeat this 10-foottall murderous being in exactly 10 days. She says of her bankers: “They are vultures but I’m not a dead body yet.” The film is filled with these gems. Towards the end, Ahana, Karan and the zoologist casually land up at the cave where the creature lives, as if they found his address on Google Maps.

This is the type of film in which the human beings are so annoying that you are actually rooting for the creature that kills them. In fact, the creature had more personality than all of them put together. In an effective opening sequence, Vikram introduces him to us by only showing us isolated parts; his talons, monstrous eyes, powerful tail. I think this Creature should have demanded a better script.
