Magnum opus

It's not just through the Talkies that Hollywood influenced the world. Iconic images of its stars — memorialised, mimicked and mocked the world over — have helped create that impression, too. And Magnum Photos, an international cooperative started in 1947 by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and others, is one of the agencies that helped make that impression lasting enough for old Hollywood to make new money even decades later.

In 2008 we got to see a collection of Magnum's images of India taken over 60 years when India Photo Now mounted a show across the country.

Now, Tasveer, an organisation committed to the mirrored notion of "the art of photography and photography as art", has brought 38 prints from Magnum's images of cinema's giants. Only one image — of Alfred Hitchcock, with a bird on his cigar — is in colour. And only one image is placed outside Hollywood — of a very sweaty Satyajit Ray shooting Aparajita.

At the Movies, 100 Years of Hollywood is on at Art.Motif Gallery, F213-C Lado Sarai, till August 23.

Prints are available for Rs 50,000 and above. Call 9871381167 for details.
