A minor rape victim gave chase to her assaulter, caught him with the help of her mother and some passersby and thrashed him a day after the alleged crime in Anuppur town, police said.
The accused, Suraj Patel, a school teacher, was later handed over to the police, who booked him under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
According to police, the girl, 14, had gone out to answer the nature's call on Wednesday evening. When she was returning home, Patel caught her and took her to a desolated place, where he allegedly raped her. He fled the spot threatening her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone, police said.
The girl, however, mustered courage and informed her mother about it. The next day, on Thursday, they decided to report the crime to the police. When the girl along with her mother was going to the nearby police station, she spotted the teacher, who started running seeing her.
The daughter-mother duo gave him chase while shouting for help. Some passersby also joined in and helped nab the alleged rapist, police said.
Sub-divisional officer of police (SDOP) JBS Chandel said a case has been registered following the complaint of the girl, and the accused has been sent to jail after being produced in the court. "The girl’s medical examination has been conducted and the report is awaited," he said.
