Human right activists are up in arms in Tikamgarh district after a video went viral on social networking sites showing a Palera police station officer allegedly inspecting the dead body of an accident victim with his leg.

A Lalitpur (UP) resident Pavan Chadar with his cousin Babu Chadar, were out on their motorcycle for distributing marriage invitation card of Pavan’s sister. While returning they were hit by a speeding truck under Palera police station area. Both died on the spot. The incident took place a few days back.

Later, a video went viral on social media apparently showing Palera police station officer Baijanath Sharma inspecting one of the accident victims dead body using his leg.

Human right activist and social worker Manoj Babu Choubey said, “It’s inhuman behaviour of the police officer. We don’t treat even animals in this fashion after their death. A thorough inquiry must be conducted by senior authorities and guilty must be punished. I will lodge a complaint on the appropriate platform and make an effort to bring this matter to cognisance of national human rights commission.

Tikamgarh SP Kumar Prateek said, “I have ordered an inquiry in this matter that will be conducted by a sub divisional officer of police. The Palera police station officer has told me that he was looking for tyre marks and his leg had not touched the dead body, and neither did he have any such intention. He was pointing to tyre marks to the police photographer for the sake of taking photos of the spot.

Palera police station officer Baijanath Sharma said he was innocent and it was a conspiracy. “The video was shot in such a way that it appeared as if I was turning or touching the dead body using my leg. Its frame has been morphed and done purposefully by some media persons whose illegal work was checked by me some time back. I was using my leg to show tyre marks and broken glass that was spread on the road after the accident and was telling our photographer to take those photos. Why will I do such an inhuman act?.”
