The man who had allegedly burnt his wife nearly six months ago at their house in JP Nagar in Bhopal has finally been arrested.

The accused, Vinod Panthi, 35, was arrested from his house. His wife, Rachna, was burnt six months ago and she is now in a critical condition at her parents' house in neighbouring district Vidisha.

On Saturday, her kin had come to Bhopal along with Rachna's infant daughter, met the senior police officers and urged them to lodge an FIR in the case. Two policemen including a woman police personnel finally went to Vidisha to record the statement of Rachna's kin. Then, the FIR of dowry harassment was registered. The section- 307 of IPC for attempt to murder was later added.

Subsequently, the police booked Panthi and his mother for dowry harassment.

City superintendent of police (CSP) Navratan Singh said the accused had been arrested. He was booked under section 307 (attempt to murder).
Panthi is a class IV employee with a government college. The incident had occurred in October, 2012.

Rachna's kin alleged that when they initially went to the police station, they were dissuaded from registering the FIR and were instead asked to focus on getting her treated.

They said despite making repeated rounds to the Gautam Nagar police station in Bhopal their complaint was not registered. Meanwhile, Rachna gave birth to a girl child at her parents’ place in Vidisha. However, Rachna's condition continues to deteriorate and she is reportedly now in coma.
