The wealth of the officers, who have been in the IAS for 32 years, includes 25 flats in Bhopal, New Delhi and Guwahati, 400 acres of land in Madhya Pradesh and a wide range of investments, official sources said.

This is probably the biggest amount of ill-gotten money detected from any IAS officer in the country.

In its 7,000-page appraisal report submitted to the state's chief secretary and lokayukta recently, I-T officials have listed details of the couple's investments in areas ranging from agriculture to real estate to the stock market.

"We are verifying facts," chief secretary Avni Vaish told HT on Tuesday.

The Joshis held some important posts at the Centre.

While Tinoo Joshi was a deputy secretary in the PMO from July 1988 to January 1990, Arvind Joshi was a joint secretary in the defence ministry during the Kargil war in 1999.
