The protest was organised by some NGOs demanding adequate compensation for the victims of the world's worst industrial disaster. The violence started after police baton-charged some elderly women blocking a rail track at the Barkhedi railway crossing.

The action angered the protesters, who started throwing stones at the police team.

Four police jeeps and a dozen motorcycles were set on fire.

District collector Nikunj Shrivastava said the police tried to talk to the protesters but they started throwing stones. The police then fired in the air to control the mob.
