Sridevi-Boney Kapoor love story so like Bollywood romances with drama, tears, attraction thrown in
Boney Kapoor first saw Sridevi in late 1970s in a Tamil film. When he first met her before Mr India, it was love at first sight. From then onwards, it was a story of loving glances, affection and deep concern till he finally won her heart. They got married in 1996.
Some love stories are just meant to be. The Sridevi and Boney Kapoor romance and subsequent marriage was what destiny chose for them. On Sridevi’s 55th birth anniversary, we walk you through their story.
Post her marriage to Boney, Sridevi led a low-profile life, rearing her two children and taking care of her family. However, a couple of years back, when she did start making public appearances with Boney and her two daughters, Janhvi and Khushi, it was hard not to see the deep affection and friendship Boney and Sridevi shared. It was evident that even after so many years of marriage, the duo was blissfully in love with each other.
However, behind all the sweetness, was years of patience, even uncertainly.
While Sridevi was always super secretive about her life, Boney has often spoken about how he fell in love with her. At an event held by India Today in 2013, he spoke at length about their romance. The first time he saw her was in a Tamil film, back in the late 1970s. He knew nothing of her back then. However, she did leave a deep impression on her. He recalled telling himself that he would like to have her in his next film. He went to buy the rights of the Tamil film, for which he wanted Rishi Kapoor as its male lead. However, before Rishi could see the film to take a decision, Boney thought of getting his leading lady on board. With that in mind, he travelled to Chennai to meet Sridevi. Unfortunately, that was not to be as she was out of a film shoot in Singapore.
Though he didn’t get to meet Sridevi, the thought stayed with him. Later, she saw again in Solva Saawan which was not a glamorous film but at that point in time, she did create an deep impact on him.
He got another chance when he got to sign her on for Mr India. He went up to Sridevi’s sets and met her. In the video, he went on to say how when he met her, it was a dream come true. She didn’t say much as she has always been an introvert. However, in broken Hindi and English, they managed to communicate. She mentioned that all her professional decisions are taken by her mother.
So he travelled to Chennai to meet Sridevi’s mother. At that point in time, she was the highest paid female actor. While she was being paid ₹8-8.5 lakh (approx), her mother quoted ₹10 lakh. That was her way of negotiating, he added. He, however, agreed to pay her ₹11 lakh. He went to say how during the shoot of Mr India, he did everything to make her comfortable.
In the process of his narration, Boney went on to say how the more he interacted with her, the more involved he got. He had even confessed to his ex-wife that he was in love with Sridevi. Boney followed Sridevi to Switzerland where she was shooting for Chandni. While it was a Yash Chopra production, and Yash had worked with Anil, it became Boney’s excuse to be there. However, the actual reason was to be there and to see Sridevi.
She could eventually see that Boney wasn’t into this for a ‘fling’ (he hesitates to use the word in the video). What really worked for him was when he was there as a solid support when her father passed away. Sridevi was abroad then, shooting for Lamhe.
And that is how they began seeing each other and by 1996, they were married.
