Shaheen Bhatt was once asked to exit a pic with Alia Bhatt, Pooja Bhatt: ‘Looking at those photos cripples till date’
Shaheen Bhatt revealed in a recent interview how a photographer had asked her to leave a picture and gone on to click “fair, cute” Alia Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt.
Actor Alia Bhatt is one of most successful young stars in Bollywood, her elder sister Shaheen Bhatt makes news every once in a while. In a recent interview with film critic Rajeev Masand, she opened up about her struggle with depression all through her teenage years, her suicidal thoughts, body shaming and how once a photographer asked her to step aside at a photoshoot with sisters Alia and Pooja Bhatt.
Speaking about the incident, Shaheen said: “It is making me uncomfortable right now, the fact that you are talking about it, is making be uncomfortable. I think women in general suffer from a lot of body image and lot of things we are told by media, by ourselves, it is problem in general. Self worth... is definitely... shame is definitely a cause for depression, it can be for any reason. With women, body image tends to be also be one of the causes for shame. Many other causes as well. Shame is central. I wish I make people understand that shame is central to any feeling of depression and any feeling of sadness and it stops you from being vulnerable. My self-worth was definitely affected as I was at an age where the seeds of that were being sown in me. I was just trying to figure out who I was and obviously when something like this happens to you at such an unsure and uncertain time in your life, it sort of reinforces that and sets in stone in a way.”

Rajeev had pointed out an excerpt from Shaheen’s book Never Been (Un)Happier where Shaheen has described how during the course of the photoshoot, the photographer asked her to leave the picture as the other two were fair, cute and how the two looked similar, while she was “dark” and a “little overweight”. She had written how “till date, looking at those pictures cripples” her emotionally.
In 2016, Shaheen had written a powerful post online where she had, perhaps for the first time, spoken openly about her feelings and her struggle against depression. In this interview, she also explained how depression should not be confused with sadness.
