This is the year of unusual lead pairs in Bollywood. In some cases, one of the stars is way older than the other; in others, their on-screen personalities are completely opposite to each other’s. Last week’s release, Aatma, had one such unusual pairing of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bipasha Basu.

Next up are the likes of Aamir-Katrina, Rajinikanth-Deepika Padukone, Ajay Devgn-Tamanna Bhatia, Sanjay Dutt-Prachi Desai and Sunny Deol-Kanagana Ranaut.

“Unusual pairings are good because they break norms and strike up fresh and interesting chemistry. Take for example, Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha in the Dabangg films. The vast difference in the ages of these stars is also because big league male actors are not more than a dozen in the industry, while we have heroines in abundance,” says trade analyst Kumar Mohan.

Ajay Devgn (43) and Tamanna Bhatia (23)
What’s new: Sajid Khan’s remake of the 1983 hit will see the young Tamanna Bhatia act with her childhood idol, Devgn.
What’s interesting: Their chemistry in the song ‘Taaki re taaki’ is creating a buzz. Tamanna will next be seen romancing Akshay Kumar (45).
Unusual meter: 7.5/10

Aamir Khan (48) and Katrina Kaif (28)
Dhoom 3
What’s new: This is the first time that Aamir and Katrina, with a huge age difference of 20 years, will be seen paired with each other.
What’s interesting: Aamir will play a negative role after long. This is his first full-fledged negative role. John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan have played the antagonists in the last two Dhoom series outings.
Unusual meter: 7/10

Sanjay Dutt (53) and Prachi Desai (24)
What’s new: Sanjay is known for his rough, menacing roles but he will be seen romancing a much-younger and demure leading lady, Prachi.
What’s interesting: It will be Sanjay’s solo hero action film after a long time. On the other hand, TV actor-turned-film star, Prachi too gets a solo outing with the remake of a south Indian hit, Saamy (2003).
Unusual meter: 8/10

Sunny Deol (57) and Kanagana Ranaut (26)
I Love New Year
What’s new: When Sunny started off his Bollywood career with his mega hit, Betaab, way back in 1983, Kanagana wasn’t even born.
What’s interesting: It will be nice to see brawny Sunny match up to Kangana’s petite avatar.
Unusual meter: 8/10

Rajinikanth (62) and Deepika Padukone (27)
What’s new: To start with, the vast age difference between Rajini and Deepika. In addition to that, while Deepika has constantly been a part of glamourous films in Bollywood, the mega star has been extremely choosy with his handful of films which mostly carry some kind of social message.
What’s interesting: The film has been directed by Rajini’s daughter Soundarya, and is touted to be India’s first film that has been shot in the 3D motion capture technology.
Unusual meter: 9/10
