Reacting to gender inequality, “misogynistic mindset” and stereotypes that continue to thrive in our society, Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor has said Kareena Kapoor Khan is setting an example as she has worked post her marriage as well as pregnancy while the men never have to face such questions. The actor was speaking at the trailer launch of Veere Di Wedding where she was asked if she will continue working after she gets married.
“There is very long way before it happens (changing of mindsets). People like Kareena are setting an example. She got married and then she was on the sets and after having a baby she was on the sets. Shahid Kapoor got married did anyone ask whether he will work or not. Nobody will ask this question to a man,” Sonam said.
There have been reports that Sonam will tie the knot in May but the actor is yet to confirm the speculation. Talking about her film, she further said, "This misogynistic mindset is what needs to change and hopefully with films like this things will change. We are hoping this film does well. It is important for this film to do well so that we as women will get our space. We can break the glass in some way or the other.”
Kareena, who was last seen in Ki And Ka opposite Arjun Kapoor, said, “I wasn’t pregnant when I signed this film. I am lucky to have a husband who is so understanding. Apart from him, producer Rhea (Kapoor), stood by me. I had to call Rhea and tell her ‘I am pregnant and she needs to take someone else’.”
Talking about her future projects, Kareena said, “I haven’t thought about what I am going to do next. Taimur is 16-month-old and I am giving him time and will be promoting this film. Then I will decide what to do next but I promise to do one or two films a year.”
Expressing hopes that Veere Di Wedding might bring about a change in Indian films, Sonam added, “I don’t think a film like this has been made before. It is entertaining and has everything from romance to drama. And why can’t a female headline a commercial film that is about girls which has a story? Things might change if this film works, I hope it brings about a change in the roles that are written for us.”
The first trailer of the film has the actors using cuss words. When asked about the censor certificate, Sonam said she is not the right person to comment on it. “This question is better asked to producers of the film. They are not here, there is a reason why they are not here. We don’t know. There is nothing objectionable in the film,” she said.
In the past, women centric film Lipstick Under My Burkha has faced a tough time with the CBFC. The censor board, headed by Pahlaj Nihalani at that time, had refused to certify the film labelling it “lady oriented”.
Veere Di Wedding releases on June 1.
