It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen is the most popular 18th century novelist, who continues to be read and adapted for screen and stage across cultures even 200 years after her death on July 18, 1817. Her books may have brought her little wealth during her lifetime but they have spawned numerous fan clubs, societies and hugely popular movie and book spin-offs and adaptations. Think Renée Zellweger as a modern-day Elizabeth Bennet in Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’ series or Alicia Silverstone as Emma in Clueless (1995).

Though Austen is best remembered for Pride and Prejudice (1813) – “light and bright and sparkling” as she called it – her other novels are just as entertaining with stories and characters that are relevant and relatable even today.
