The BJP will launch a nationwide protest against the Centre’s move to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, said senior party leader and public accounts committee chairman Murli Manohar Joshi on Sunday.

“The proposed FDI is against the interest of the country and will harm small businesses,” Joshi said. In June, the central government’s high-level committee of secretaries, headed by cabinet secretary Ajit Kumar Seth, recommended 51% FDI in multi-brand retail.

The finance ministry has given its consent to it. The decision had been delayed as several political parties had voiced concern that it would adversely affect the small retail sector.
