The service will be available immediately in New Delhi and will expand to other Indian cities by the end of the year, SingTel said in a statement.

SingTel customers who travel to India will be able to send and receive text messages and access the Internet using their mobile phones through the network of its associate, Bharti Cellular, the largest mobile phone operator in India.

Bharti customers who travel to Singapore can also roam on SingTel's network and enjoy GPRS services.

"Currently, no other GSM (global mobile system) operator in the world has established GPRS roaming with any other Indian operators," SingTel vice president for consumer products Hui Weng Cheong said.

SingTel also has mobile phone operations through a subsidiary in Australia and associates in Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand.
