Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday congratulated the Indian men’s hockey team for bagging the gold medal in the Incheon Asian Games.

In a message to the Indian squad, Badal said the captain, coach, manager and every member of the team deserved applause for their outstanding performance.

Expressing solidarity with boxer Sarita Devi, who lost her semifinal bout under controversial circumstances, the CM said every Indian was proud of her as she fought like a tigress. “Sarita, you are our champion” he added.

The deputy CM also congratulated the Indian team for defeating traditional rival Pakistan in the hockey final. He announced that the Punjab government would honour all Punjabi players who had brought laurels for the country by winning medals in the Asian Games.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and former Punjab chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal also lauded the Indian hockey team for winning the gold medal. She praised the Punjabi players for their brilliant performance.

Bhattal said Punjab had been a cradle of Indian hockey. She appealed to the state government to honour all Punjab players with suitable rewards, according to a press release.
