Soon after the food was received in the school, the mid-day meal workers found some inspects in the rice after which CITCO officials as well as the education department were immediately informed about the same. “The contaminated food was sent back,” said school principal Tajinder Kaur.
DPI (s) Kamlesh Kumar and deputy director Chanchal Singh along with other officials of the department also reached the spot and inspected the food items.
Kamlesh Kumar said he immediately called the health department officials and asked them to collect the sample of the contaminated food. “The detailed report is expected soon and if something is found, action will be taken against the contractor,” he added.
He said as a matter of precaution, he also ordered the department officials to check the level of hygiene in schools where the mid-day meal is prepared in Chandigarh and ensure such incidents did not come up again.
CITCO is responsible for serving food to 20,000 students in nearly 40 other government schools besides two institutes of hotel management in Sector 42 distribute food in rest of the government schools.
After the complaint here, the department checked the food served in other schools from CITCO kitchen but no specific complaint was found, claimed department officials
The food in GSSS-45 was served to 700 students in the morning shift. Due to this episode, the first shift students could not be served the mid-day meal. Panic struck among students, although school principal claimed that it was a lone case and in past, no such incident of contaminated food took place in the school.
However, similar cases were found in two government schools in Chandigarh last year.
