Not a single cattle fair has been held at the cattle fair ground at Nabipur village in the district ever since its inauguration in December 2012.
Built on the main GT road, the fair ground is spread over in more than 25 acres. Earlier, the cattle fair was being organised on the outskirts of Sirhind town. But after the new cattle fair ground was constructed at a cost of more than Rs 8 crore, no fair has been held in the district.
Renowned for good cattle, the buyers not only from Punjab but from other states also visited the Sirhind cattle fair. The dairy farmers in the district rue that they had to visit other cattle fairs being organised either at Rajpura or Khanna.
Deputy commissioner KS Sangha said that he would call meeting with animal husbandry department and take possible action to utilise the space at Nabipur.
Claiming that cattle fair ground falls under the jurisdiction of zila parishad (ZP), chairman ZP Baljeet Singh Bhutta claimed that he had not been receiving a single penny of rent from the ground for last two years. He said that he had written to chief minister Parkash Singh Badal urging him to direct the concerned authorities for organising cattle fair in the district itself. He said he has also demanded that the licence fee should be deposited in the account of ZP directly, so that development works could be carried out in the rural areas.
