PGI gets Rs 1,200 cr under 12th five year plan

The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, will get R1,200 crore under the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017), a communication from the union health ministry said.
"The institute had demanded R1,638 crore and the union ministry of health and family welfare approved a budget of Rs 1,200 crore," said Chetan P S Rao, deputy director (administration).
As per an official communication of accounts branch of the institute, the final outlay of R1,200 crore approved under the 12th Five Year Plan was under process.
Sources revealed that in the next four years, the budget will be utilised to establish five advanced centres -a 280-bed neurosciences centre, 100-bed liver diseases centre, 300-bed mother and child care centre and 150-bed mental health centre. Another urban and rural health centre will also be established at the cost of around R35 crore.
Around 50% of sanctioned budget will be spent on construction of separate buildings of these centers and around 35% will be spent on purchase of medical equipment. Rest of the budget will be spent on hiring human resource, including doctors, nurses and paramedical staff.
Once fully functional, the new centres will add around 1,000 new beds to the existing capacity of around 2,000 beds.
The budget will also be spent on expansion of existing infrastructure, including on second phase of advanced eye centre and advanced cardiac centre.
In the 11th Five Year Plan, the institute was sanctioned Rs 515 crore, which was spent on work of advanced trauma centre, expansion of advanced eye centre and modernisation and expansion of Nehru Hospital.
Significantly, the institute is also working on its master plan and in the process of earmarking space for the buildings of these new centres.
