Chandigarh Police on Wednesday claimed to have solved a kidnapping case within five hours of getting the complaint. Four persons were arrested, the abducted realtor was rescued and Rs 1.5-lakh ransom recovered. The victim's brother followed the kidnappers after paying them, and kept the cops in the loop, which led to the arrests.
Station house officer (SHO) of Sector 34, inspector Rajesh Shukla, told the media that a man named Surjit Singh called the police on Tuesday night that his brother, Gurmail Singh, a realtor based at Kharar, had been kidnapped by a group of his friends. He told the police that realty middleman Rohit Kumar, a resident of Sector 51, had picked up his brother and had called him for a ransom of Rs 10 lakh. The police registered a case of kidnapping for ransom and criminal conspiracy.
A little later, Surjit called the police at 10.30pm and informed that he had delivered Rs 1.5 lakh to a kidnapper at the Sector-50-51 traffic lights. Surjit added that Rohit, the kidnapper, had walked down to the signal to take the money. Surjit started following him secretly and gave the police the number of the house where Rohit went.
The police also tracked the mobile phone location of the accused Rohit and of victim Gurmail to house number 130 in Sector 51, and arrested Rohit, his associate Rashid who works as a driver and stays at Sector 16, and two women, Harman and Tanya.
About the motive, Shukla said, "Gurmail and Rohit were known to each other for the past few years, ever since they had met in a Patiala jail where both of them were lodged for some offences around two years ago. Rohit knew Gurmail had good money, so he and his friend Rashid planned the kidnapping to make easy money."
Rohit, who is actually a resident of Phase 10, SAS Nagar, called Gurmail to his house in Sector 51 on Tuesday evening and asked for Rs 10 lakh, threatening to get him booked in a false rape case otherwise. When Gurmail did buckle, Rohit confined him and called his brother for ransom.
