5-kg heroin smuggled from Pakistan seized in Amritsar village
The counter intelligence wing of Punjab Police on Wednesday seized 5 kg of heroin, which was smuggled from across the border, from a house in Kotla Doom village falling under the Lopoke police station.
The counter intelligence (CI) wing of Punjab Police on Wednesday seized 5 kg of heroin, which was smuggled from across the border, from a house in Kotla Doom village falling under the Lopoke police station.
The seizure comes a day after the contraband’s two alleged smugglers had managed to flee despite having an encounter with a police team in Kotla Doom village situated near the India-Pakistan border.
According to the CI officials, a tip-off was received that a gang of international smugglers was active for smuggling of heroin from the border area falling under the Lopoke police station to other locations.
“Acting on the secret information, a naka was laid by a team of CI, Amritsar, on the bridge of the drain situated in Kotla Doom village on Tuesday. The team came to know that Gurwinder Singh and Harpreet Singh of Madan Lal Dhingra colony in Amritsar were coming from the border village Rania side with a consignment of heroin. When the accused who were in a Hyundai i20 car (bearing registration number PB-02-DB-2053) were indicated to stop at the naka, they made no halt. Instead, they opened fire at the police party and fled towards Kotla Doom village side.
“Our police party chased the accused and retaliated. One of the gunshots hit tyre of the accused’s vehicle and it met with an accident with a Mahindra Bolero car. The accused then hurriedly grabbed a rucksack bag from the car and fled by foot,” said inspector Inderdeep.
He said a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and various Sections of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused at state special operations cell (SSOC) police station in Amritsar against the duo accused.
He further said, “On Wednesday morning, another tip-off was received that the duo smugglers had kept the rucksack bag with their relative Surjit Singh of Kotla Doom village. Surjit was arrested and during his interrogation, 5 kg heroin was recovered from his home.”
