A joint team of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS), Manali, and Lahaul and Spiti police has recovered the body of a Bengaluru hiker two months after he fell into a deep crevice while on a hiking expedition to 6,264-metre CB-13.

The deceased mountaineer, Vedvayas, who worked at a private security company in Bengaluru, was part of a five-member trekking team. The team had sought permission from the Indian Mountaineering Federation before undertaking the expedition, but failed to inform the local administration beforehand.

He fell into the crevice while crossing a glacier at a height of 5,300 metre on June 16.

Initially, the mountaineers accompanying him tried to rescue Vedavyas, but were unable to reach him after which they informed the local administration and army.

An emergency team sent by the Lahaul and Spiti administration and a seven-member team from the Dogra Scouts of the Indian Army also failed to rescue him as inclement weather hampered the operation.

Lahaul and Spiti superintendent of police (SP) Manav Verma said that a search and rescue team was sent to the spot again on August 17.

“The team led by ABVIMAS inspector Jitender recovered the body after a gruelling two-hour operation on August 23 around 11am,” said Verma.

The mortal remains of the deceased could be brought to the nearest road after an eight-hour and 17km descent.

“The body has been kept at Kullu and his family members have been informed,” the SP added.
