Chandigarh University, Gharuan, lifted the overall winner trophy in the Best Physique Championship, defeating over 350 participants, even as competitions grew tighter in the Weightlifting Championship on Day 3 of the ongoing All India Inter-University Weightlifting and Best Physique Championship, being held at the sports complex of Chandigarh University, Gharuan.

As many as 1,050 athletes, representing 170 universities from across the country, are participating in the championship, under the supervision of around 300 referees and judges.
On Friday, Chandigarh University defeated Savitri Bai Phule University, Maharashtra, by two points to secure the overall trophy. Competitions were held in the under-90 kg and 90+ kg weight categories in the Best Physique Championship and in the under-73 kg and under-81 kg weight categories in the Weightlifting Championship.
DAV College lifts PU inter-college cricket title
Riding on Nipun Sharda’s unbeaten 72-run knock off 52 balls, DAV College, Sector 10, beat GGDSD College, Sector 32, by seven wickets in the final of the Panjab University Inter-College Cricket Tournament for Men played on Friday.
Batting first, GGDSD College posted 174 for 3 in 20 overs, with opener Jagmeet Singh hitting an unbeaten 92 runs. Surya scored 41 runs, while Hardik Chaudhary made 26. In reply, DAV College achieved the target in 19.2 overs, losing three wickets. Brief scores: GGDSD: 174/3 in 20 overs (Jagmeet Singh 92*, Surya Narayan 41, Hardik Chaudhary 26, Rohit Dhanda 1/12, Shubham 1/21, Sagar 1/27); lost to DAV College: 176/3 in 19.2 overs (Nipun Sharda 72*, Deepinder 41, Abhishek Saini 1/35, Hardik Chaudhary 1/38) by seven wickets.
Volleyball meet in Nirmal Milkha Singh’s memory on March 18
The Chandigarh Volleyball Association is going to hold the Chandigarh State Junior (boys and girls) and Senior (men and women) Volleyball Championships at the Sector-7 Sports Complex from March 18 to 21.
The tournament is being held in the memory of Nirmal Milkha Singh, former director, sports, Chandigarh, and former president of the Chandigarh Volleyball Association. She was patron-in-chief of the association for the last 25 years and had captained the Indian volleyball team in 1956. Players born on or after January 1, 2003, are eligible to participate in the championships. CGC Landran’s annual athletics meet concludes
The 16th annual athletics meet of Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Landran, concluded on Friday. The two-day event witnessed a myriad of events like long jump, javelin throw, relay race and arm wrestling. Niharika Singh, secretary, women’s wing, Indian Body Building Federation; and Vikas Sabarwal, superintendent of police, Patiala, were chief guests of the event.
Illicit liquor seized from resort
A joint team of chief minister’s flying squad, excise department, and Chandimandir police on Friday raided a resort on Morni Road, near Nada village, and seized 161 bottles of high-end imported liquor. The resort didn’t have the license to keep and serve the liquor, officials said.
Three-day annual conference starts at PGI
The department of anaesthesia and intensive care of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) on Friday started its three-day 16th Annual Perioperative and Critical Care Transesophageal Echocardiography conference. For the last 16 years, the department has been organising this workshop to train cardiac anaesthesiologists, cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, critical care physicians and emergency physicians in the nuances of transesophageal echocardiography, as well as focused emergency echocardiography, for management of critically ill cardiac as well as non-cardiac patients.
PUAA and UICET celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav
The Panjab University Alumni Association, in association with Dr SS Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, organised a variety of competitions on Friday as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. Over 100 students participated in the event, which is part of the Chandigarh administration’s iconic week.
