Hitchhiker stabs truck driver to death over fare in Mohali, held

Police on Tuesday arrested a 21-year-old youth from Delhi for stabbing a truck driver to death following an argument over fare for a ride from Panipat to Mohali.
The victim, Shiv Nandan, 23, hailed from Jharkhand.
According to police, Nandan had offered to drop the accused, Sahil Khan, of Bhajanpura, Delhi, in Mohali in exchange for ₹200, but later raised the fare to ₹400, which led to an altercation.
Police said Khan worked as a labourer in Chandigarh and was residing in Gwala Colony, Maloya.
As per Nandan’s maternal uncle Mithlesh Malakar, 38, who lives in Transport Area, Sector 26, Chandigarh, he and Nandan worked as drivers in the same transport company.
Around 11 am on Monday, Nandan informed him over the phone that he had gone to Delhi to transport a goods consignment from Sector 82, Mohali.
On his way back, Nandan picked him up near Chhat light point in Zirakpur. Khan was also present in the truck and Nandan informed him that he had offered him a ride from Panipat to Mohali.
Malakar said when they reached Sector 82 around 12.30 pm, Nandan and Khan had a heated argument over the fare. Amid the fight, Khan took out a knife from his bag and stabbed Nandan in the stomach. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he died during treatment.
Khan tried to flee, but was nabbed by truck drivers and cops present near the spot.
He was booked under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code at the IT City police station. Police said Khan was already facing an assault case in Delhi.
