Juvenile, woman among 5 held with 6.3 kg heroin, 9 pistols

Continuing their crackdown on illegal arms and drug trafficking, the Amritsar commissionerate police have recovered 6.3 kg heroin and nine pistols with the arrest of five individuals, including one juvenile.
Apart from the juvenile, those arrested have been identified as Armaandeep Singh, 20 and Teerath Singh, 20, both residents of Sheikhmanga village in Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala; Shamsher Singh, alias Shera, 21, a resident of Hetampura village in Amritsar Rural; and Kamlesh Rani, 65, a resident of Indira Colony in Amritsar.
The recovered pistols include three .30-bore Zigana and one 9MM Zigana (made in Turkey), three .30-bore (made in China), one 9MM Glock (made in Austria) and one 9MM Beretta (made in Italy).
Police teams also impounded three motorcycles being used to carry out smuggling activities.
Giving details about the seizure, Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were in contact with foreign-based handlers. They were receiving consignments of illegal arms and drugs for further supply as directed by their handlers.
Amritsar commissioner of police (CP) Harmanbir Singh Gill said acting on reliable inputs, police teams first arrested Armaandeep and Teerth, leading to the recovery of six illegal pistols.
In another operation, the CP said police teams apprehended a juvenile following recovery of 6.09 kg heroin. Further probe led police to another accused, Kamlesh Rani, who was found in possession of another 211 gm of heroin.
Rani was also found to have a previous case registered against her under the NDPS Act, he said.
Three more illegal pistols were recovered from the fifth accused, Shamsher, alias Shera. More arrests and recoveries were likely in coming days as investigation progressed, he added.
Three separate cases under relevant provisions of the Arms Act and the NDPS Act were registered at the Cantonment and Chheharta police stations in Amritsar.
