The encroachments outside outside Ludhiana Improvement Trust’s (LIT) complex on Rani Jhansi road which were overlooked due to alleged political patronage provided by a former Congress MLA, have been cleared by the department

The Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) conducted an anti-encroachment drive in the area on Tuesday, after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came to power in the state.

Apart from confiscating the vends of street vendors, who had encroached upon LIT’s prime property, the officials’ teams also ordered removal of food trucks, which were parked at the front of the complex, for non-payment of rent.

As per the officials, the complex has turned into a white elephant for the LIT as it had failed to auction the same for over a decade. In the meanwhile, a firm backed by an ex-Congress MLA applied for permission to run food trucks at the front against a monthly fee. A few street vendors also installed their vends nearby.

One of the officials requesting anonymity said for the last few months, the owner of food trucks failed to pay the monthly fee. The officials were reluctant to take action as the Congress MLA who lost the recent assembly elections, was providing patronage, he said.

LIT executive engineer Naveen Malhotra said, “The food truck owners failed to pay the monthly fee, due to which action was taken on Tuesday. There was no political pressure, but the action got delayed as the LIT was involved in election duty in the recent past. The site has now been cleared of encroachments.”
