Aam Aadmi Party’s Anandgarh sarpanch Satpal, 52, was killed by miscreants in the village late Tuesday evening, officials said.
The attackers, reportedly numbering 15 to 20, allegedly stabbed Satpal with sharp-edged weapons before running him over. His son Rahul and some other villagers present at the site confronted the assailants and managed to nab one of them, while the others escaped.
Rahul said while they were taking his father to the hospital in a car, the accused tried to intercept them in another vehicle.
They instead drove to Sadar police station, but Satpal died by the time they reached there, he said.
He alleged that the assailants belonged to Mehlanwali and other nearby villages. He claimed that his father had tried to resolve a dispute between two factions a few days ago and that one of them took offence and killed his father. Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Kulbhushan Sharma said that the matter is under investigation.
