A fast-track special court in Panchkula on Friday convicted a 52-year-old man and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl.

Based on the evidence, the court convicted the accused and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment besides imposing a fine of  ₹50,000. (HT File)

The case was registered at the Kalka police station under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in 2024. The mother of the victim had reported that the girl was playing in the neighbourhood when a man working at a grocery shop and living in the same house sexually assaulted her.

The victim’s statement was recorded and her medical examination was conducted. Other evidence was collected from the spot besides providing counselling to the child. The convict hails from Punjab.

Based on the evidence, the court convicted the accused and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment besides imposing a fine of 50,000.
