Planning a train trip from Chandigarh? Brace for disruptions from September 10

Rail passengers travelling to and from Chandigarh will face major disruptions from September 10 to October 15, with the Northern Railways cancelling 12 train services, short-terminating or short-originating six others at Ambala and diverting two trains (see box).
The changes are being made to facilitate the ongoing renovation works at the Chandigarh railway station.
The ₹462 crore redevelopment plan, being undertaken by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), has already missed five deadlines, the latest one being July 31.
According to details shared by RLDA, about 88% of the work has been completed, while the remaining work is expected to be finished by the year-end. The pending work includes portions of the foot overbridge, through-roof structure and pedestrian pathway on the Chandigarh side of the station.
The work will be carried out in three 12-day phases: September 10-21, September 22-October 3 and October 4-15.
The railways has also proposed temporary stoppages at Mohali for selected trains to help manage passenger traffic, while changing the scheduled berthing – the assigned platform where a specific train is planned to arrive and park at a railway station – of 76 trains.
