Punjab man hacked to death by nephew over property dispute

A man was hacked to death with a sharp-edged weapon allegedly by his nephew over a property dispute in Hoshiarpur, police said on Monday.

The suspect, identified as Sarabjit Singh, resident of Hajipur, Hoshiarpur, has been booked on murder charges and is absconding, police said.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 7.30 pm on Sunday when victim, Mahinder Singh, was returning home on his scooter carrying a bag of flour.

As Mahinder reached near his residence in Hajipur, Sarabjit allegedly attacked him in the street and repeatedly struck him on the neck, head, arms and other parts of the body with a sickle-shaped sharp-edged weapon, they said.

Hearing the commotion, family members raised an alarm, following which neighbours gathered at the spot. Seeing the crowd, the suspect allegedly fled the scene carrying the weapon. Mahinder was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Hajipur with severe bleeding, where doctors declared him dead, the police stated.

According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and the accused were related and had a dispute over property.

A case has been registered at the Hajipur police station, and efforts are on to nab the accused, they added.
