The accused, identified as Amarjeet alias Amar, was arrested from the Rani Bagh area following sustained technical and ground surveillance, he said.

According to the police, the case was registered at the Maurya Enclave police station in April after the complainant approached the police alleging that he had received calls and messages from a person claiming to be Randeep Malik of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.

The caller allegedly demanded two crore and threatened to kill the complainant and his family if the money was not paid. The complainant also handed over the chats and messages to the police.

Special Commissioner of Police HGS Dhaliwal said Amarjeet was allegedly involved in the extortion and had been absconding. Proceedings under Section 84 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita had also been initiated against him, while his interim bail application before the Delhi High Court was dismissed.

Acting on a specific input, a police team went to Multani Mohalla in Rani Bagh around 5 pm on August 20 and confirmed the presence of Amarjeet. The accused allegedly noticed the team and tried to flee, but was chased and caught, Dhaliwal said.

He was subsequently brought to the Crime Branch in Dwarka and formally arrested. During the investigation, the police found that Amarjeet allegedly had links with the Lawrence Bishnoi and Randeep Malik gangs and had played a role in identifying a potential extortion target.

The police further said that the extortion demand was to be paid in cryptocurrency. A payment link was allegedly shared with the complainant for transferring the demanded amount.

Amarjeet, a resident of Trinagar in northwest Delhi, is educated up to class 10 and had previously worked at a mobile phone market in Karol Bagh. According to the police, he was allegedly involved in illicit liquor trade till April this year and went underground after the registration of the extortion case.
