Financier among 5 held for running over man with SUV, staging it as accident in Delhi

Almost a month after a 45-year-old man was killed in an alleged road crash in Kanjhawala, the Delhi Police arrested a 45-year-old financier and four of his associates for killing him with an SUV and staging it as a road accident.

The main conspirator was arrested on Wednesday. Police said the accused had an old grudge against the victim, Deepak, who he accused of harassing his sister.

Police said the accused had attempted to kill the victim twice. On July 16, they first hit the victim with an SUV and then ran over him repeatedly.

The deceased, a resident of Majra Dabas village, was found dead near Chandpur Majra Road in northwest Delhi. Police said the associates were apprehended in July and have now been arrested.

According to the police, a PCR call was received at Kanjhawala police station on July 16 about a man being hit by a Scorpio. Police found Deepak’s body at the spot, while his damaged scooty was lying around 100 metres away.

DCP (Rohini) Shashank Jaiswal said, “Investigation revealed that the death was not a road accident. Investigators learnt that the victim had been targeted in a similar accident two weeks earlier, on July 2, when he was riding his scooty near Prem Pyau Road in Majra Dabas. He was allegedly hit by an unidentified white Hyundai i10.”

Police analysed CCTV footage and traced the Hyundai i10 to one of the associates, who was then arrested on July 17. “He revealed the conspiracy and the role of the associates. The Scorpio and the Hyundai i10 were also recovered,” said the DCP.

Police said the main conspirator had earlier fired outside the house of Deepak’s brother before planning the July 2 attack. The associates were helping him flee and destroy evidence, they added.

Police added that the main accused confessed to planning earlier attacks on the victim and eventually killing him on July 16.
