Satyendar Jain withdraws Delhi court plea to stop airing clips from jail cell
On Wednesday, a new clip emerged of the AAP leader eating food and being served inside his cell. This came a day after he told the court he was denied special fasting diet as per religious belief.
Jailed Delhi minister Satyendar Jain on Thursday withdrew the application filed in a Delhi court which had sought directions to restrain media to air any CCTV clip of him from the Tihar jail cell. The Aam Aadmi Party leader said he will move the Delhi high court instead.
On Wednesday, Jain's counsel Rahul Mehra while filing the petition had submitted that despite a hearing in the matter, another footage was leaked yesterday morning.
“They have taken a particular day and particular time and shown some major thing is going on in jail. Please test everything. We are not running away. Today one release, tomorrow another release", Mehra had argued in court.
On Wednesday, a new clip of the AAP leader eating food and being served inside his cell had surfaced. This came a day after he told the court he was denied special fasting diet as per religious belief. The video showed Jain eating variety of food including some in which he was seen having raw fruits and vegetables and also prepared meal. HT could not identify the authenticity of the video.
On Saturday, a video had emerged of him getting massages over several days from a man who turned out to be an inmate accused of raping a minor.
The court had on November 17 denied bail to Jain and two others in the case. The federal anti-money laundering agency had arrested Jain in a case based on a CBI FIR lodged against him in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Jain is accused of having laundered money through four companies allegedly linked to him.
The CCTV videos have emerged as the latest flashpoint in the showdown between the BJP and the AAP ahead of the December 4 elections of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The AAP has accused the BJP of releasing fake videos due to fear of losing the polls. The BJP has demanded that chief minister Kejriwal remove Jain from the cabinet.
