Staff member in Congress leader’s office accused of rape, denies allegation

According to the police, the complainant, a resident of Najafgarh, has alleged that her husband, who died of Covid in 2020, was a Congress worker.

The Delhi Police have registered a case against a staff in the office of Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on a complaint by a 25-year-old woman who has alleged that she was raped by the official, officers aware of the matter said on Monday.

In a statement, Madhavan said the complaint was made in a “pre-concerted manner to settle political vendetta” and it is devoid of any merit. (Hindustan Times)

According to the police, the complainant, a resident of Najafgarh, has alleged that her husband, who died of Covid in 2020, was a Congress worker. She claimed that after the death of her husband, she frequently visited the Congress office and that was when she came in contact with PP Madhavan, 71, who works in the office of Gandhi, the police added.

In a statement, Madhavan said the complaint was made in a “pre-concerted manner to settle political vendetta” and it is devoid of any merit.

According to the complaint, the woman alleged that the accused promised a job to her and first raped her in February at a house in north-east Delhi’s Sunder Nagri, and then several times at his residence.

Deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) M Harsha Vardhan said, “A complaint was received at Uttam Nagar Police Station on June 25. A case under section 376 (Punishment for rape) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered. We are investigating the matter.”

Madhavan, in his statement, added, “I have got to know of registration of the alleged FIR only from the media reports. Though I had appreared before the Station House Officer, Uttam Nagar on June 25, and put forth my explanation whereafter I was asked to leave.”

“I condemn the smear campaign run against me by the complainant and the people behind her and the same appears to be propelled by sick minds in order to vilify the image of a reputed 71 years old man know for his service to the society,” he said.
