Advising students to always speak the truth and follow rules, Uttar Pradesh governor Anandiben Patel on Saturday asked them to make “Satyamev Jayate” (truth alone triumphs) the motto of their lives as good conduct and right thinking mattered a lot. She further said initially there will be a little hardship but thereafter the life will become smooth and they will be able to earn respect from one and all.

The governor gave this advice to the graduating students at the 20th convocation of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU). She gave away 92 medals to the toppers at the undergraduate level, 9 at postgraduate level and conferred PhDs on 81 students. This year, degrees were sent to 48,000 students using blockchain technology developed by IIT Kanpur.

Congratulating the medal winners and recipients of degrees, the governor said students should not get disturbed for not winning medals. “The important thing is your conduct and behaviour. Always speak the truth as it will make life uncluttered,” she said.

The governor also asked students to consider their parents as role models and to not forget their sacrifices as they made them worthy of what they have achieved today. She called upon the degree receiving students to take a pledge that come what may, they will serve their parents.

The governor said employment was an important stage in the study of technical education. “I am happy that the training and placement cell of the university is actively providing employment opportunities in coordination with industrial establishments,” she said. Patel told students that wherever they work, they should work with full devotion, honesty and always be polite towards the staff working at the lower level at their workplace.

Chief guest Pankaj R Patel, one of the stalwarts of the Indian pharmaceutical industry and chairperson of the Board of Governors of IIM Ahmedabad and Udaipur, told the graduating students to be employment givers and not employment seekers.

He said, “This is an era of innovation and entrepreneurship. Many countries have transformed their entire economy on the strength of entrepreneurship and innovation. Unlimited doors of employment are open. India is also making rapid strides in this direction.”

The governor presented Pankaj R Patel with honorary D Sc degree. She also feted three distinguished alumni of the university. Inspector general of police, Lucknow zone, Laxmi Singh was awarded Nari Shakti honour while Abhay Kumar Singh bagged distinguished young alumni award for administration and Dileep Gupta won distinguished alumni award for entrepreneur.

On the occasion, Uttar Pradesh technical education minister Ashish Patel said, “There has been a qualitative improvement in the field of higher education.” He appealed to the students to engage in public interest work and always keep in mind the education received from the university wherever they worked.

On this occasion, vice chancellor, AKTU, Prof Pradeep Kumar Mishra presented the annual progress report. He said under the new education policy, AKTU had given its students the option of pursuing major degree courses as well as minor degrees in interdisciplinary courses from this academic session.

This opportunity will not only facilitate the students to study interdisciplinary courses but will also motivate them for greater acceptability in industrial establishments as well as for self-employment, he added. As per the VC, the university has provided around 25,000 job opportunities to the students of more than 700 affiliated institutions in the last academic session.

“More than 10,000 students have got employment opportunities in many reputed companies like IBM, Microsoft etc. Also, a special employment camp was organised only for girls in which nearly 800 girl students participated and 14 of them were placed at a salary of 15 lakh per annum,” Prof Mishra said.

Moreover, reading material, school bags, fruits and sweets were distributed to 34 schoolchildren in the convocation ceremony and old students were also felicitated during the annual event.
