Magathane metro station road caved in due to excavation by builder: MMRDA

Mumbai: After the caving in of a road near the Megathane Metro station on Line-7 on Tuesday, the Brihanmumbai municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a stop work notice to a builder, whose excavation work adjacent to a drain chamber allegedly led to the collapse of the surrounding soil and damaged the chamber wall.
In a bid to prevent any untoward incident near Magathane Metro station on Line-7, officials of the BMC, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Maha Mumbai Metropolitan Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) undertook a joint inspection.
HT had reported on how following a mud slide, a service road caved in next to the Metro station, where its staircase lands. According to sources, on Wednesday the situation was alarming as it appeared like more soil was losing grip and collapsing.
The BMC has issued a stop work notice to the builder and continuous monitoring and necessary actions are being taken by the MMRDA, and MMMOCL to address the situation.
“During the inspection, it was observed that the chamber of the stormwater drains near entry-exit 2 of Magathane station was in proximity to the foundation of the stairs and escalator. Unfortunately, due to a deep excavation carried out by a builder adjacent to the drain chamber, the collapse of the surrounding soil has damaged the chamber wall,” MMRDA said in a statement.
“This has led to stormwater flowing into the builder’s excavation area, posing a potential risk of further collapse to the drain chamber and the foundation of the stairs and escalator,” said the statement.
The entry-exit points of the Dahisar side Metro station have been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure, to ensure safety of the passengers and the overall integrity of the metro system.
“It is important to note that the incident has not affected the normal operations of the Metro services. We are actively implementing remedial measures to prevent any further soil collapse. An FIR has been registered against the builder,” said an official.
Sanjay Mukherjee, chairman and managing director, MMMOCL, said, “We have concluded that there is no risk to the operation of Metro services. We are working closely with the BMC and the builder to implement remedial measures and ensure safety and stability of the stormwater drain chamber, as well as the foundation of the stairs and escalator at Magathane station.”
The responsibility of carrying out the backfilling work lies with the builder, and they are taking the necessary steps to complete this task, said sources.
