Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Friday appointed senior IAS officer Rajesh Narvekar as the state’s new Transport Commissioner, replacing Vivek Bhimanwar, who retired at the end of January.

Narvekar, a 2009-batch IAS officer, previously served as commissioner of the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Sources in the state bureaucracy said he had proceeded on leave following differences with political leadership. Earlier this month, the government appointed Sridhar Dube Patil as the new FDA commissioner.

Narvekar previously held a posting in the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. He has also served as CEO of Raigad Zilla Parishad, municipal commissioner of Navi Mumbai, and collector of Thane district.

As Transport Commissioner, Narvekar’s primary responsibility will be ensuring the implementation of high-security registration plates (HSRP) for vehicles across the state.

In a related development, the government also appointed Sameer Kurtkoti, a 2013-batch IAS officer, as Secretary of the Fee Regulatory Authority, Mumbai.
