Police said the deceased resided with his family on the 17th floor of Hyde Park Society in Sector 78. His father works at a private company.

On Wednesday around 6.30pm, when his parents were inside their home, the child fell from the 17th-floor balcony.

“The investigation revealed that the child used to stand on the concrete slab of the balcony grille to watch children play near a ground. On Wednesday evening, when he was watching the children playing from the balcony again, he lost his balance and fell,” said a police officer.

Police said residents who saw the boy fall rushed to his flat to inform his parents. “They were unaware of the incident until residents went knocking on their door,” added the officer quoted above.

Police said the boy succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Subsequently, police were informed and all legal formalities were completed.

The family refused a post-mortem examination and conducted the last rites without filing a complaint, police said, adding that the deceased is survived by his parents and a 16-year-old sister.
