Gujarat: Fumes from toxic chemical kill 4 workers in Surat godown

Four workers died after inhaling toxic fumes at a chemical godown in Mota Borsara village of Mangrol tehsil in Gujarat’s Surat district.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when the workers were shifting drums of chemicals, according to police officials.

The victims have been identified as Imtiyaz Patel (45), Amin Patel (22), Varun Vasava (22), and Ragha Ram (54), according to a police official. One worker survived and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The owner of the godown has been detained, and authorities are registering a case against him under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the police said.

Officials from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board are investigating the matter, and the contents of the drum will be analysed to determine the cause of the incident.
