A woman was killed, and at least five people were injured, after two balconies – on the first and second floors – of a seven-storeyed building collapsed on them on Wednesday in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar.
The deceased, identified as Hansaben Jamod, and the five injured people were standing on the ground floor when the balcony slabs of Madhav Hill Complex on Takhteshwar Road caved in, said police inspector PD Parmar at Neelam Baug police station.
The building is more than 50 years old and in a dilapidated state, he said. The incident occurred around 12 noon.
The ground, first and second floors of the building house a shopping complex, while the rest of the floors are used for residential purposes. “The entire building has been vacated and the cause of the collapse is being investigated,” Parmar said.
The fire department rushed to the spot and carried out search and rescue operations. Hansaben was admitted to a hospital but died during treatment.
