Youth flees with ₹23 lakh jewellery from Jamshedpur shop a day after buying ₹5,700 jewellery
A man stole ₹24 lakh in jewellery from a Jamshedpur shop just a day after buying ₹5,700 worth, with ties to a similar theft in Howrah.
A day after a man bought jewellery worth ₹5,700 from a jewellery shop on Shankosai Road No-1 under the Ulidih police station (PS) in Jamshedpur on Monday, he managed to steal and flee away with jewellery worth ₹24 lakh from the same shop the next day on Tuesday, police said on Wednesday.
“We are examining the CCTV footage of Biswanath Jewellers in Shankosai under the Ulidih PS limits and have circulated his CCTV footage to every PS in the city and the district. CCTV footage has also been sent to other neighbouring states. Preliminary investigations found that the man is from outside and had committed a similar jewellery loot worth ₹25 lakh from a jewellery shop in Howrah (West Bengal) in January 2026,” Mohd Shariq Ali, Ulidih PS officer-in-charge (OC), told HT on Wednesday.
A case has been registered against the unidentified thief in the Ulidih PS on the basis of a complaint by Abhijit Dutta, the shop owner Bishwanath Dutta’s son, who was present at the shop at the time of the crime.
According to Dutta, the man came to their shop for the first time on Monday and bought a gold locket and a silver talisman worth ₹5,700 and took a bill in the name of Swati Nayak.
“He came back again on Tuesday and picked up a bag of jewellery, put it in his pocket and left, saying he would come later. When I checked the shop’s CCTV footage, I noticed the theft. Subsequently, my father came to the shop and checked the stock, finding that a bag of jewellery worth ₹22-23 lakh was missing. We had brought new sets of jewellery worth ₹7-8 lakh to the shop on Monday,” Dutta stated in his complaint.
“After the news of the jewellery theft and CCTV footage went viral, a jeweller from Howrah called me up and revealed that this very man had stolen away jewellery worth ₹25 lakh from his shop in January in the same manner. This youth had stolen jewellery from Dheeraj Jewellers in Sakchi a few months ago. Police had arrested him and sent to jail earlier. After coming out of jail, he has started his operations again,” Bishwanath Dutta said.
