Pune: A 25-year-old married woman allegedly died by suicide following harassment by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands and other forms of abuse. Police have registered a case against husband Gorakh Sonawane, father-in-law Sambhaji Sonawane and mother-in-law Alka Sonawane based on a complaint filed by the victim’s family.

The incident came to light on June 2 in Chandannagar area.

According to the police, the woman was subjected to mental and physical harassment after her marriage. Her family alleged that the accused repeatedly demanded money and valuables from her parental home and abused her when the demands were not met. The complaint alleges that she was forced to undergo an abortion against her will. Unable to cope with the alleged harassment, the woman reportedly ended her life, police said.

Further investigation is underway.
