The match can still go either way, but with Australia finding themselves on top at the very start of the match, it will be difficult ask for the home team. They need quick wickets in the first session of Day 2 to make a difference and deny Pat Cummins from being the first visiting captain to win the trophy since 2001.

"He is just out of nick. Players are not machines. You highlight it because he is 41 on Sunday but he was the No 1 bowler in the world four months ago. He is just having a poor summer.

"It was highlighted today because Broad was swinging the ball and he wasn't moving it. He is a great cricketer because he has overcome spells like this one. Can he do it again at the age of 41?"

Put to bat first, England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett stitched a 61-run stand before the hosts lost three quick wickets for 11 runs. Moeen Ali and Harry Brook then revived the side with their 111-run partnership before they incurred another collapse, losing four wickets for 28 runs. England were eventually folded for 283 runs with Mitchell Starc picking four wickets.

Australia then ended Day 1 with 61 runs on board at the loss of David Warner. Khawaja, on 26* and Labuschagne, on 2, will resume Day 2 with Australia still 222 runs behind.
