Record-breaker Shreyas Iyer's one-year-old chat with Ashwin goes viral after India's win: 'Didn't make my debut but...'
Following the culmination of the India vs Sri Lanka Test series in Bengaluru, a year-old chat between R Ashwin and Shreyas Iyer went viral on Twitter.
India's middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has taken to Test cricket like fish to water. The right-hander has looked at one throughout his nascent career of 4 Tests so far and has already entered the history books on a few occasions. Following his record-breaking twin half-centuries in the recently-concluded India vs Sri Lanka pink-ball Test, his conversation with senior off-spinner R Ashwin went viral on social media. Exactly one year ago, before the start of IPL 2021, Iyer featured in Ashwin's YouTube talk show, “DRS with Ashwin” as a guest on one of the episodes. While they largely talked about his domestic career, him captaining the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, Ashwin also asked Iyer about his Test aspirations. At that point of time, Iyer was yet to make his Test debut.
In a video uploaded on Ashwin's YouTube channel, when Ashwin asked about Iyer's Test aspirations, that latter sounded dejected while revealing an interesting story.

“Shreyas Iyer, the Test aspirations. An unbelievable first-class record. Where do you stand on this?" ask Ashwin.
In response, Iyer quipped: “Obviously, my first priority was to play Test cricket when I first started playing cricket. My first-class record has been really amazing so far. I have always played attacking cricket in domestic, but, yeah, I haven't got the chance. I have got one run-out. I didn't make my debut but I still got one run-out. That's an achievement for me. This was against Australia in Dharamsala. Virat had a shoulder issue and I came in as a replacement (fielder).”
Fast forward to 2022, Iyer has made this format his own after making his debut against New Zealand in 2021. After 7 innings in 4 four Tests, Iyer has amassed 388 runs at an average of 55.42. His feat includes 3 half-centuries and a hundred.
At the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, during the second Test, Iyer hit 92 and 67 in both the innings, respectively, and became the first Indian batter to get to the milestone in day-night Tests history.
